The papers include laboratory notebooks, correspondence, reprints of papers read before the Royal Society of NSW, photographs (personal and scientific) and textile samples dyed with natural oils. With Smith's papers is some related material including the records of the H.G. Smith Memorial Fund 1924-1927, correspondence of his sons, 1928-1934, and the script of a documentary film on Smith, 1960.

Chemist. Smith was employed at the Technological Museum (later the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences), Sydney, from 1884 to 1922.
